Congress, BJP star campaigner­s to hold rallies this week in state

DEHRADUN: As the state gears up to cast their votes on April 19, the star campaigner­s have scheduled to address rallies, and public meetings this week, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing his second election rally in the state in Rishikesh on April 11 to improve the party’s prospects in Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal and Haridwar Lok Sabha seats. He addressed his first election rally in the state in Rudrapur of Udham Singh Nagar on April 2.

BJP state media in charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said, “It will be a historical rally [in Rishikesh]. There will be a record turnout at the rally. It will improve BJP’s prospects in Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal and Haridwar Lok Sabha seats.”

While defence minister Rajnath Singh will address three public meetings on April 12 in Gauchar, Lohaghat and Kashipur, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath will address public meetings in Kumaon on April 10 and 11.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi will address two public meetings on April 13 in Roorkee (Haridwar) and Ramnagar.

Former party chief Rahul Gandhi’s public meetings were earlier proposed in Almora and Haridwar on April 9 but they have now been postponed.

State Congress vice president Mathura Dutt Joshi said, “Priyanka Gandhi will address two public meetings on April 13 in Roorkee (Haridwar) and Ramnagar. His (Rahul Gandhi’s) election campaign trip to the state has been postponed. The new schedule will be finalised soon.”

Polling for all five Lok Sabha seats in the state will take place on April 19 in the first phase of Lok Sabha elections. The counting of votes will be held on June 4. Since 2014, the BJP has held all five seats in the state Almora (SC reserved), NainitalUd­ham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, Garhwal and Tehri Garhwal.
