Days after Congress’s Garhwal candidate Ganesh Godiyal sought donations from the public for the poll campaign, the party’s Haridwar candidate Virender Rawat has now posted a plea on social media saying his party lack resources for the election campaign as its account was seized.

In a post of Facebook, Rawat wrote, “Brothers and sisters, you know that our party’s account has been seized. We are short of resources. If you feel like helping me, please send me ₹100 or more than that as per your capacity in my bank account number or QR code so that our election campaign doesn’t stop due to fund crunch.”

On April 3, Congress leader Ganesh Godiyal said he needs financial support to fight the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which “enjoys” massive wealth and shared QR code on his social media to seek donations from the public.

In a video message Godiyal said, “I want to make an appeal to brothers and sisters of Garhwal constituency .... you must have heard a ‘jumla’ that echoed in the Parliament in Delhi...that was ‘Ek akela sab par bhaari’.”

“With your strength, support and blessings, this is clearly reflected in the Garhwal constituency. The Bharatiya Janata Party has massive wealth power...with it, they want to influence the elections. I don’t want to be alone in this form as well. I have opened a bank account to contest the election, I expect your contribution in it in the form of blessings as per your competence, so that I can fight their wealth power as well. Even one rupee is precious to me.”

Reacting to the development, Uttarakhand Congress vice president Mathura Dutt Joshi said that the party is facing a financial crunch for campaigning. “We are facing a financial crunch for campaigning in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls due to our party’s accounts being frozen by the central government. We have no other option than seeking donations from the public to run our campaign.”

Reacting to the matter, the Bharatiya Janata Party accused the Congress of deceiving the voters.

State Bharatiya Janata Party media in charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said, “It is nothing but an attempt by the Congress to deceive voters. The action by Income Tax, which is an independent agency, was taken for a reason. The Congress would never tell the public about the same.”
