- Prasun K Mishra htpatna@hindustantimes.com

Bhojpuri actor and singer Pawan Singh has announced to fight Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from Karakat parliamentary constituency.

His announcement is believed to upset the apple cart of both NDA and INDI Alliance.

Singh popular among Bhojpuri speaking people as Power Star has announced his candidature on his official X handle. Referring to a poem of Ram Dhari Singh Dinkar, Singh has written that being inspired by the poem he had decided to fight as an independent candidate from Karakat in Bihar. Will soon meet my Karakat family….

Pawan Singh’s entry in Karakat is seen as a jolt to NDA candidate Upendra Kushwaha. The CPI ML candidate Raja Ram Singh also comes from the Kushwaha community.

In Karakat, there are more than 3 lakhs upper caste votersabout 2 lakhs Rajput, 75,000 Brahmin and 50,000 Bhumihar voters. The number of Kushwaha-Kurmi votes is about 2.5 lakhs. Upper caste and backward votes are equal. Scheduled caste and OBC voters are the deciding factor.

Pawan Singh, earlier a Modi supporter and had written this on his X status, has now removed the lines. He was offered a BJP ticket from Asansol in West Bengal but he returned the ticket. He was demanding a BJP ticket from Ara from the very beginning.

His supporters said Singh would get the party ticket in place of outgoing Ara MP RK Singh. Grapevine had it that

Pawan would be getting an RJD ticket and later a ticket from the BSP after RK Singh was announced candidate from Ara.

Pawan Singh is popular among youths, especially from Rajput community. Karakat, earlier Bikramganj before new delimitation, was a citadel of Rajputs and several MPs from this caste represented the constituency. Here Rajputs are not happy with the parties giving tickets to the candidate belonging to the backward community.

“The NDA candidate would suffer if Singh succeeded in getting a good share of community votes,” political observers believe.

Here outgoing JD-U MP Mahabali Singh, a Kushwaha, had been denied ticket after the seat was given to Upendra Kushwaha. His supporters also are unhappy.
