Jamshedpur girl top-ranked from Jharkhand in UPSC

JAMSHEDPUR : Swati Sharma, a resident of Mango in Jamshedpur, emerged as the top-ranked candidate from Jharkhand in the UPSC-2023 exams, securing an all-India ranking (AIR) of 17, according to the UPSC results declared on Tuesday evening.

Akanksha, another girl from Jamshedpur, also figured among the top with an AIR of 44. Garhwa deputy commission­er Shekhar Jamuar’s daughter, Sakshi Jamuar, also figured among the top 100 candidates with an AIR of 89, while IIT-Dhanbad’s 2016 batch student Shivang Srivastava achieved an AIR of 102.

Baibhav Kumar, another aspirant from Ranchi, secured the 151st rank, and Deogarh’s Apurva Anand achieved the 163rd rank. Aman Agrawal from Chaibasa secured the 544th rank.

Incidental­ly, the national topper Aditya Srivastava, with an AIR of 1 from Lucknow, also has a link to Ranchi. His family lived in Ranchi for four years on the Indrapuri Marg-1 at Ratu before they shifted to Lucknow due to his father’s job transfer. He has his maternal grandfathe­r’s house in Harmu Housing Colony, and his grandfathe­r Shivram Srivastava worked in Ranchi ITI.

The 25-year-old Swati Sharma, daughter of ex-army personnel Sanjay Sharma, lives in Ulidih in Mango here and cleared the UPSC in her third attempt. She graduated Class 10 from the Army Secondary School in Kolkata in 2014, 12th from the Tagore Academy here, and pursued a political science degree from Jamshedpur Women’s College in 2019.

“Since 2020, for four years, I have completely focused on clearing the UPSC. I studied 8-9 hours a day and took mock exams by various coaching institutes in Delhi since 2022,” Swati told HT on Wednesday. Akanksha lived and studied in Jamshedpur until intermedia­te and is now a professor of geography at Ranchi’s SS Memorial College.

Apart from this, Tata Steel employee Samar Kumar’s son Harshit Verma from the city secured the 272nd AIR, Loyola student Hritwik got the 520th rank, and Bodam government school teacher Khurshid Ikram’s son Atiq Wakar secured the 819th rank.

Jamshedpur deputy developmen­t commission­er (DDC) Manish Kumar’s elder brother, Munidra Kumar, cleared the UPSC this time.
