Placards shout loud: Bollywood celebrities won’t waste words

- Yashika Mathur

Silence is the new statement, and Bollywood celebrities are hitting the right note with it. Actors, right from stalwarts such as Amitabh Bachchan, to young actors such as Kriti Sanon, Dia Mirza and Shruti Seth, have been part of videos where, without uttering a word, they have managed to give out a strong message. While Kriti’s rebellious post was about women safety, Shruti’s video was to promote an upcoming festival. “If you put your message through a written post, people don’t take it seriously, anymore. Youngsters nowadays watch videos for an impactful message,” says wrestler Sangram Singh, who also put up a silent video on women empowerment. Actor Shruti Seth, who put up such a video with Gul Panag, calls it a spontaneous move. “It was just a tact and I don’t think much thought went into it. It was a different way of presenting. We also had a small budget, so it worked best for us,” she says. Advertising expert, Prahlad Kakkar says the trend will be impactful, as long as it isn’t overused. “It’s a silent statement. Wherever it is less crowded, it has a lot of impact, but the moment it gets too crowded, you are dead. At one time, placards were in, but then it got crowded and went out of fashion. People took up singing, dancing, but that also went out of fashion. Placards work like a gun-shot because its different and not crowded. As long as it remains uncrowded, it will remain impactful,” he says.
