Situation in the US scary and disgusting: Suraj

- Prashant Singh

He made his big film debut with Ang Lee’s Hollywood film, Life of Pi in 2012. Here’s catching up with Delhi boy Suraj Sharma, as he readies for his Bollywood debut, Phillauri.

Keeping in mind the recent attacks on NRIS in the US (Suraj is based there), is the situation scary there? Yes... It’s all about the thought and anticipation and confusion of what people might associate you with. Since New York is a bubble in itself, I ended up not really seeing any of this unless I was at a (Donald) Trump rally, which I was! It was interesting because people don’t necessarily believe in something someone else says; they also need a reason to just be heard and that’s where that fire is stemming from. Luckily, I’m far enough away from that to feel insulated but yes, it’s scary as much as it’s disgusting.

As for your Bollywood debut, how was it working with Anushka Sharma? I found Anushka amazing. She is super nice, friendly and a really pleasant person but when she is working, she is at it.

What made you sign a Bollywood film? I want to experiment with genres. Also, I felt that Phillauri was the right film for me if I want to do Bollywood and Hollywood at the same time.

Did you ever feel like, ‘after a biggie like Life of Pi, what’s next?’ It can be very difficult if you are like, ‘oh, it’s all downhill from here’. I went through something very intense, so after that, it all might feel a little bland but I love the feeling of constant adventure to try something new.
