The additional ‘A’ in actor Aamir Khan’s name doesn’t help British boxer Amir Khan, who gets mistaken for the Bollywood superstar “all the time.” The former unified light-welterweight world champion, who was in Delhi over the weekend, told us, “So many people confuse me with Aamir Khan. In UK, even on the phone people mistake me for him. And on Twitter, Facebook, people send me messages thinking this is Aamir Khan ‘the actor’s’ account. I think that my fans would be sending messages to his account too,” he says, laughing about the “great confusion” due to the similarity in their names. Amir thinks that it would, in fact, be interesting if Aamir stars in his biopic. “In Hollywood, someone who is young and really athletic should play my part. It’s hard to say who can do that. I don’t mind doing it myself. But in Bollywood, Aamir Khan would be ideal. It’ll be amazing if Aamir Khan makes a movie about Amir Khan, the boxer,” says the 30-year-old who began competitive boxing at the age of 11, and has won 31 out of 35 fights till date. Born to a Pakistani family in England, Amir is quite clued into Bollywood. “I know a little bit of Hindi. I picked it up from Bollywood films that I watch on flights. Bollywood is so big now, especially in the UK. I like watching movies of Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan —the Khans have taken over Bollywood. I have seen Aamir Khan’s Dangal .... it’s a good movie man,” says the Olympic silver medallist, who is presenting the Super Boxing League in India. It’s not just films, there’s more he likes about India. “The people and the food is so amazing here... I like the black dal and the chicken gravy.” Mention the craze for Pakistani spice mixes in India and he adds in jest, “Don’t worry, I will bring for you next time... I bring the masalas, you do the cooking because the cooking here is good. Then it’s 50-50.”
