25 years in Bollywood: Sanjay Leela Bhansali has ‘loved every bit of it’

- Juhi Chakraborty

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has, over the past 25 years, constantly reinvented himself. Having started off with Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), he went on to films such as

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Devdas (2002), Black (2005), Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela (2013), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018). The National award-winning director says there were hiccups along the way, but he has taken them all in his stride.

“The journey’s been incredible; I’ve loved every bit of it... But, I don’t think these nine films would have been possible without the team I have worked with — from technicians to the talent. They have been instrumental in making my vision come alive,” he shares.

With Bajirao Mastani, Bhansali turned music director, and even bagged a National Film Award for best music direction. “Music is the soul of a film; it translates emotions in the most beautiful way. Turning music director wasn’t a planned decision, just pure serendipity,” he reveals.

One of the most celebrated filmmakers, the 58-year-old has had many high points in his career, but says he can’t pick one. “I’ve made each film with a lot of love, passion and commitment. Some have been successful, some haven’t. But, every moment we’ve created is truly special,” he muses.

Bhansali is now gearing up for the next chapter in his life — his 10th film, Gangubai Kathiawadi, starring Alia Bhatt. “Right now, my full attention is dedicated towards it. Having made it over a period of two lockdowns, we did not have an easy time. But, we’ve loved every minute of it. I can’t wait to present it to the world,” he ends.

There were many challenges along the road... I’ve been fortunate to receive immense love from the audience. SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI, Filmmaker
