Managing anxiety in epilepsy
Alot of patients suffering from epilepsy also suffer from psychiatric disorders. Anxiety and depression are the most common psychiatric disorders, which are also responsible for the poor quality of life in such patients. At times, they also affect the outcome of epilepsy treatment. Depression is often chronic and can be associated with higher morbidity and mortality. It can become a leading cause of disability, too. In epileptic patients, the severity of depression disturbs their quality of life more than epilepsy itself.
The pressures at work, on the home front, daily travel and handling our responsibilities — all this takes a toll on our health. For people with epilepsy, there might be additional stressful situations. Techniques that can help relieve stress will go a long way in helping patients with epilepsy.
Consider a few steps that can help reduce your stress levels:
Involve yourself in some relaxation and breathing techniques.
Try meditation.
Stay physically active and exercise regularly. Focus on building your self-esteem.
Learn to manage anxiety. One can only control the things that are in one’s hands. Don’t think about situations that may arise or can arise. Just focus on doing the things which are possible for you to do and are in your control.
