JULY 13, 2016 JAIPUR: Nineteen-year-old Yogesh Kumar, who was on the verge of losing a job with the CRPF as a quirky government order categorised even Hindus from his caste as Muslims, got relief after the ministry of social justice issued a corrective circular a day after HT highlighted the issue.

The ministry issued a circular on July 14 clarifying that since there were both Hindus and Muslims under the three castes — Rana, NagarchiDamami and Baiti (Barot) — all people from the castes would be eligible for reservation under the other backward caste (OBC) category.

Earlier, there was no clear consensus on Hindus falling under these three castes when it came to reservation.

Hindustan Times on July 13 had published a report ‘Convert or lose job offer, Jaipur youth in catch-22’ to highlight the plight of the Hindu youth from Rana caste who had just three days to make up his mind on either forsaking the opportunity of getting a job with the CRPF or to convert to Islam to avail the reservation.

A previous order issued by the ministry of social justice marked all members of the caste as Muslims after 2013. It held that members of the Rana caste had converted to Islam from Hinduism in the Mughal era and, so, all people from the caste were Muslims.

“After the news was published in HT on June 13, the circular pertaining to inclusion of my caste in the OBC category was released on June 14 and I was finally given my caste certificate on June 15,” said Yogesh.

“After getting the caste certificate, I went to Gujarat and gave my physical exam for the CRPF in which I passed. They have shortlisted me for the written exam, but have said that I need to produce a caste certificate generated from the Central government website within 10 days. Since the certificate that I have been given is manually prepared and is valid only for state government jobs, I will get the certificate generated online only when the ministry of social justice updates the new amendment on its website and also intimates the Central government,” said Yogesh.

He said that if the ministry fails to update the amendment within 10 days, his candidature will be rejected.
