Cong seeks EC action against Modi

A ruling Congress delegation on Monday petitioned before the Election Commission seeking action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly addressing a poll rally violating norms in Uttarakhan­d.

The party alleged the BJP organised the rally in Haridwar on Feb 10 without taking permission from the authoritie­s.

The delegation led by Congress’s Uttarakhan­d in-charge Ambika Soni, chief minister Harish Rawat and party’s state unit president Kishore Upadhyay called on chief election commission­er (CEC) Nasim Zaidi and other members of the poll panel in New Delhi.

The delegation sought to know from the EC, why action would not be taken against the BJP leader for the violation.

The Congress is particular­ly miffed by the action taken against its vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Rawat for attending a road show in Haridwar on Feb 12, two days after PM addressed the rally.

Soon after meeting the EC members, Upadhyay told HT over the phone that they raised four issues. “Our leaders were booked for attending the road show for which we had taken permission. But no action was taken against the PM for attending the rally, for which the BJP Even did not seek permission,” Upadhyay alleged.

Two district-level leaders were recently booked for the alleged violation after the Congress raised the issue with the chief electoral officer Radha Raturi. But that failed to pacify the ruling party, which is seeking action against Modi.

Congress workers in Haridwar sat on a day-long dharna at district headquarte­r demanding an FIR against Modi and other BJP leaders who shared the stage during the rally.
