POLARISATION POLITICS NOT GOOD FOR INDIA, SAYS GEHLOT

- HT Correspondent htraj@hindustantimes.com

Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday called the BJP a “fascist party” that does “not believe in democracy”.

He accused the party of keeping Congress out of the government despite the people’s mandate in Goa and Manipur.

“Today, there is an atmosphere of fear in the country, whether it is industrialist, business or common man, which is not a good tradition for democracy,” said Gehlot, while speaking to reporters at the Congress office in Jaipur.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his felicitation programme in Delhi talked about moving ahead by taking ruling and opposition parties together, but his party’s working style is “quite opposite”.

“In UP assembly elections, BJP out of 403 seats did not field a single minority candidate and started polarisation,” he said, adding that, “It is different that BJP through its Muslim spokespersons tried to say that they will move ahead with Hindus, Muslims, Sikh and Christians.”

He said BSP’s Mayawati too played the polarisation card and intentionally gave 100 tickets to minorities, which is “not a good sign for the country”.

Gehlot said that today BJP rules at the centre and in Rajasthan, but “no work is happening in a democratic manner”.

“Nobody cares for ministers and MLAs in the state and MPs at the centre. After winning elections in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP has become more arrogant and high-headed and it will cause damage to the party and the country,” he added.
