Jodhpur AIIMS fails to attract faculty, faces shortage
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jodhpur, one of the six new AIIMS set up the central government in the country, has failed to attract faculty.
The ministry of health and family welfare has sanctioned 305 posts for faculties at AIIMS, Jodhpur. However, only 99 posts have been filled so far. Out of the sanctioned 327 senior resident posts, 105 have been filled and out of 301 junior resident posts, only 84 have been filled so far.
The central government has set up AIIMS in Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh and Jodhpur.
According to sources, AIIMS, Jodhpur, has failed to attract faculty as it lacks resources and infrastructure. Except for Delhi and Mumbai, Jodhpur is not connected to any major city by air. AIIMS sources said that it is one of the main reasons why the medical institute has failed to attract faculty.
AIIMS officials said that recruitment is done on a need basis, keeping in mind additional services and facilities planned at the hospital. Vacant faculty posts are being advertised regularly by the institute.
“We have not been able to fill up all advertised positions,” said administrative officer Manish Srivastava, adding that the selection process for faculties has recently ended and the matter has been sent to the ministry of health and family welfare for their approval. “It will be clear how many positions will be filled only after we get their approval,” Srivastava said.
Various positions of senior and junior residents have also been advertised and filled up on a need basis, an official said, adding that separate Standing Selection Committees (SSCs) have been formed for AIIMS, Jodhpur, to fill up the vacancies expeditiously.
Various measures are being taken to attract quality faculty, AIIMS officials said. The upper age limit for direct recruitment for posts of professor and additional professor has been raised from 50 to 58 years.
Faculty is also appointed on a contract basis as a stop-gap arrangement. The ratio of teachers to students has been revised from 1:1 to 1:2 for all MD/MS disciplines.
