FIRST STEP Subdued celebrations as toppers look to crack JEE Advanced

Kansal has always known that he wanted to be an engineer. Kansal, who scored 335 out of 360, has secured the 21st rank (all India) in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2017.

Kansal, who is the IIT JEE Mains Jaipur topper, will now appear for the IIT JEE Advanced on May 21.

“I studied for nearly seven hours every day. But what I’ll remember is the fun I had with friends and teachers here at the coaching institute,” said 17-yearold Kansal, who did his schooling from Cambridge Court High School in the city and is the son of a chartered accountant.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) started conducting the IIT JEE Mains and IIT JEE Advanced from 2012. The Mains score and rank is used by the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and other central technical institutes for admission while the advanced score and rank is used by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). This year the cut off for advanced is 95, which implies that only those scoring above 95 out of 360 in the mains are eligible for the advanced exam.

There was a brief celebration at Kansal’s home as he is busy preparing for the advanced exam.

The second rank holder from Jaipur is 16-year-old Kritin Garg, who scored 335 and got the 22nd rank, as he is younger than Kansal. Kritin, whose father is an accountant at the secretariat, wants to pursue research in atomic physics after doing engineering. “The mains result has given a boost but my focus is on the advanced,” said Kritin, who was schooled at the St Joseph Convent School. The third topper from Jaipur, Devansh Garg, scored 330 and secured the 33rd rank. Reportedly, there were nine students from Jaipur in the top 200. All three toppers from Jaipur were coached at the ALLEN Career Institute. HTC
