BCCI to chalk out ICC plan on May 7

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called for a crucial Special General Meeting on May 7 in New Delhi after being isolated in its opposition to the revised revenue and administrative model passed by the International Cricket Council this week, it was confirmed on Friday.

“We are going to convene the SGM on May 7 and there will be only one agenda in the meeting --- how to go ahead on the ICC matter,” acting BCCI president CK Khanna said.

India were outvoted after opposing the revised revenue and governance model which the ICC Board passed in Dubai. The BCCI had insisted on the global governing body retaining the Big Three plan controversially adopted in 2014 giving India, as well as Australia and England, the lion’s share of the revenues.

However, all others voted for the new model pushed by the ICC for a more equitable distribution of revenue with only BCCI opposing it. On governance changes, only Sri Lanka backed India.

Some senior BCCI officials want India to pull out of the ICC Champions Trophy, starting in England on June 1, as a retaliatory measure. However, the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators, headed by former CAG, Vinod Rai, as well as some other cricket officials are advocating against taking such a drastic step that could have serious ramifications.

As per the new model, India will get the biggest share but only $293 million with the ICC reportedly willing to consider offering another $100 million. The BCCI will discuss all aspects of the issue at the SGM.
