Accused sold mgmt quota seats at medical colleges
The five men, who were arrested on Sunday for trying to leak the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) question paper, used to take money from students to get them admitted to various medical colleges under management quota, said officials of the Anti-Terrorism Squad, Rajasthan police, on Monday.
The ATS had arrested five men — Vikram Sinha, Vikas Sinha, Bhupendra Sharma, Ashok Gupta and Rahul—for allegedly taking money from candidates appearing for NEET on the promise of leaking the question paper. However, the question paper they were purportedly selling didn’t match with the one that came in the exam on Sunday.
“During the investigation, we have learnt that for the last several years, the gang has been involved in getting students admitted to various medical colleges under the management quota,” said superintendent of police (ATS) Vikas Kumar.
Kumar added that the men would take a commission for the students and the medical college administration for this. The ATS is also probing who gave the gang the question paper, which they claimed was for the NEET exam.
“The question paper that we found in their possession didn’t match the actual paper, but we are investigating the fact if they were supposed to receive the original paper,” said Kumar.
Notably, five people were also arrested from Patna for a similar offence on Sunday. “We are also investigating if these two gangs had any connections between them and the one operating in Jaipur and Delhi didn’t get the original question paper because of the arrests made in Patna,” said another senior ATS official on the condition of anonymity.
Kumar said that the ATS is also investigating how the gang was planning to handle the students once they discovered that a fake paper had been given to them. “We are questioning them about the management quota,” said the SP.
The gang in Rajasthan had taken at least ₹5 lakh each from 11 candidates who were appearing for the exam on Sunday.
The ATS had arrested the men from various private facilities in Delhi and Jaipur when the men were giving the candidates the fake question paper. “We are interrogating them to know more about their modus operandi and accomplices. We are also trying to ascertain whether there were other illegal activities involved,” said Kumar.
