The Jaipur police on Saturday arrested two people, including a Nigerian national, who were part of an international cyber fraud gang.

According to the police, the men were arrested after a Jaipurbased woman, who was duped of around ₹1.35 lakh, filed a case against them.

The police said that the woman came to know a foreign national, Kelvin, through a matrimonial site last month and he told her that he wants to come to India to meet her.

“Kelvin told the woman that he will land in Mumbai on May 2. On the morning of May 2, the complainant got a call from a woman who identified herself as Simran and said that she was speaking from the customs office of the Mumbai airport,” said deputy commissioner of police (east) Kunwar Rashtradeep.

He added that Simran told the complainant that Kelvin had landed in India with gold coins, electronic goods and 75,000 pounds and needed to pay ₹40,000 as tax. “The complainant also spoke with Kelvin who asked her to deposit the money. The complainant deposited ₹30,000 into a bank account number which was provided to her,” said Rashtradeep. The police said that after that the woman deposited ₹10,000 and ₹95,000 on two separate occasions into the same account.

The woman grew suspicious when she was asked to deposit ₹1,86,000 once again into the bank account and registered a police case at the Moti Doongri police station.

“We started investigating and after analysing the call details, we searched several places in Delhi and Noida. Finally, we arrested two people — Kaushal Prasad Gupta a resident of Bihar and Kenena Solomon, a Nigerian national,” said the DCP.

The police said that both the men were arrested from New Delhi and during interrogation it was learnt that they are part of a big gang of cyber frauds, which has several Indian and Nigerian nationals in it. Officials said that the gang used to target people through various social media platforms and would dupe them of lakhs of rupees. The officials said that the duo is being interrogated to know more about the other gang members.
