A 55-year-old man was arrested from Haryana on Monday for duping a Jaipur resident of ₹10 lakh on the pretext of selling gold in powdered form.

The arrested man, a resident of Haryana, was living in Jaipur about a year ago at the time of the incident, the police said.

“The arrested man has been identified as Mohammed Taher, a resident of Haryana who was living under the alias Satveer in Jaipur. It was at this time that he met the complainant,” said Anil Jasoria, station house officer of Kardhani police station.

The police said Taher made acquaintance with the complainant and started visiting his house regularly. “Taher used to bring milk and other food items to the complainant’s house. In this way, he gained the trust of the family,” said Jasoria.

After a while, the accused said he has ample quantity of gold in powdered form, which he wanted to sell at a cheaper price. Taher convinced the complainant to buy the gold, the police said.

“He gave him a sample of the gold to check with a jeweller. It appears that this was original powdered gold and thus the jeweller didn’t suspect anything. Following that, he (Taher) gave him rest of the quantity and took ₹10 lakh as payment,” said Jasoria.

After that Taher couldn’t be traced, and the complainant discovered that what he had bought thinking as powdered gold was actually glass, the SHO said. “A case was registered under section 420 (cheating) of the IPC and we arrested Taher from Haryana on Monday,” he said. A preliminary probe suggests that Taher had aother associates. His role in other incidents is also being probed, said the police. “We are searching for them and have secured a four-day remand of the accused. More details are expected to emerge as the probe progresses,” said Jasoria.
