Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma, who Wednesday asked the state government to coordinate with the Centre and take necessary steps to declare cow as a national animal, retired later in the day.

Born in Dausa in 1955, Justice Sharma, who graduated in law from Government College in the district, gave what was possibly his last verdict, which he later said was his “soul’s voice” and added “no crime is more heinous than cow slaughter.”

He was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Rajasthan on January 7, 1979 and went on to represent Maharaja Sawai Man Singh Trust, Rajasthan State Mineral Development Corporation, and Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation among others.

After a successful practice in the trial courts and Rajasthan high court, in 2000, he was appointed as the additional advocate general of Rajasthan.

In 2004, he was appointed as Senior Panel Counsel, in order to look after the cases of Union of India.

Sharma was elevated as a judge of the Rajasthan high court on July 5, 2007.

After retirement, Justice Sharma said he had decided 1,12,054 cases until May 18, which, he added, was a record for any high court judge.

Justice Sharma had hit the headlines for his landmark judgement on the government cow shelter at Hingonia near Jaipur.

“Peacock is a Bramhachari and it does not have sex with a female peacock. The peahen gets pregnant drinking the tears of the peacock.” I spoke with conscience. Our religious texts tell us how important cow is. Even its dung and urine are beneficial to us... (cow) nourishes sick persons. keeps the environment clean...”

The country’s apex consumer body has asked the Rajasthan Postal Department to pay ₹25,000 to a student who lost an academic year because of a delayed admission form.

Rajasthan resident Garima Gupta’s application for admission to an institution was delayed by seven days despite being sent through Speed Post, a quick service delivery system of the postal department. The form was expected to reach its destination within 24 hours.

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) here dismissed a revision petition filed by the department against a state commission order on this.

The department was asked to pay her ₹20,000, besides the ₹5,000 spent on litigation.

“In regard to the fact that a young student has lost a valuable one year in getting admission to the institution of her choice, the compensation of ₹20,000 cannot be described as excessive by any standard,” the NCDRC.

A district forum had passed the order against the department which was upheld by the state commission and then the NCDRC on May 1. PTI
