On Sunday, the house owner’s son is said to have seen the clips (of the rape), following which the victim was allegedly beaten up by family members of the girl.

Aam Aadmi Party and Congress too have demanded the use of paper trail machines after expressing doubts about the safeguards of EVMs.

EC officials said newer papertrail machines are being added to their existing stock that was used during polls earlier. The commission needs 70,000 units of VVPATs for Gujarat and 15,000 for Himachal Pradesh elections.

Earlier this year, the Centre sanctioned over ₹3,000 crore to the panel for purchase of 16.5 lakh VVPAT units from Electronics Corporation of India Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited that also manufacture EVMs.

During the state elections this year, VVPAT units were used in 76 assembly constituencies — 40 in constituencies of Goa, four in Uttarakhand, 20 in UP, four in Manipur and eight in Punjab.

“Apart from programmes on radio, television and social media outreach, officials will visit every block in these states to conduct demonstrations. Local celebrities will be roped in to help with the publicity,” an official said. Panchayats will collaborate by assisting in sending mobile exhibition vans and street play teams to faroff constituencies.

A 30-year-old man, who allegedly raped a minor girl, was lynched by an angry mob in Shillong on Sunday.

The victim, Yakub Khan Nongkynrih, allegedly raped the 11-year-old daughter of his landlord several times and also took pictures and made videos of the acts on his phone. The man was staying alone as a tenant.

“On Sunday, the house owner’s son is said to have seen the clips, following which the victim was allegedly beaten up by family members of the girl,” said Davis NR Marak, superintendant of police, East Khasi Hills district.

When police reached the scene at Nongkseh village in upper Shillong at around 6pm, a large crowd gathered and got involved in a scuffle with the police who were trying to rescue the injured man.

“Two of our team members also sustained minor injuries before we were able to rescue the heavily injured man and take him to hospital. But he succumbed to his injuries on the way,” Marak said.

According to the police, the victim sustained multiple injuries, including those on his head.

Preliminary investigation suggests he may have died due to perforation of his lungs by broken ribs.

“We have arrested the house owner and his son and are conducting investigations. A case of murder has also been lodged,” the SP said.

Police are yet to find the background of the tenant and the landlord.

Upset over being accused of practising sorcery, a couple allegedly committed suicide after killing their three minor daughters in Karimnagar district of Telangana, police said on Monday.

The incident took place on Sunday night in Kandugula village of Huzurabad mandal.

According to Huzurabad assistant commissioner of police M Ravinder Reddy, Ganta Komuraiah, 30, and Ganta Komuramma, 28, took the extreme step after Komuramma’s parents accused her of practising sorcery.

The woman’s parents called her to their village Kondapur and chided her for allegedly indulging in black magic and witchcraft. They also held her responsible for their ill health, which they suspected to be a result of such evil practices, the officer said.

Unable to digest the allegations, the couple decided to end their lives. At about 11.30pm, Komuraiah hanged his three daughters aged nine, eight and six using a saree, police said. Later, he and his wife hanged themselves in their house.

The deceased earned their livelihood by selling toys. The bodies have been sent for post mortem and further investigation is underway.
