Burdwan teacher takes help from criminals to get wife killed

A school teacher was arrested from Katwa town in Burdwan district early on Saturday for allegedly murdering his wife with help from two criminals he met in jail two years ago.

The victim’s six-year-old son witnessed the murder.

The trio strangulat­ed the victim on Tuesday night and disfigured the body by pouring acid. The criminals were paid ₹1 lakh for the job and promised ₹2 lakh more.

Police said Ujjwal Bhaskar Ghosh, 40, regularly tortured his wife Mahua Ghosh, 27, for dowry.

A history teacher at a local school, Ujjwal spent a night in jail two years ago when Mahua lodged a complaint against him.

It was in jail that he met the criminals and kept in touch with them, the police suspect.

When Mahua was not seen for three days, Ujjwal’s neighbours got suspicious on Friday night.

They accosted Ujjwal and started thrashing him, after which he confessed to his crime.

The neighbours informed the police.

Ujjwal’s mother, Chhobi Ghosh, was also arrested.

Ujjwal’s son told the police that he saw his father and two unknown persons strangling Mahua in the drawing room.

The child said when he started crying, his father locked him inside the bedroom.

Ujjwal was being interrogat­ed, the police said on Saturday afternoon but did not reveal the names of the criminals before the media.

A third criminal is suspected to be involved.
