A middle aged woman and her minor daughter died after the pickup jeep they were travelling in got swept away by the Chittora River in Kherwada area of Udaipur on Monday morning.

The driver and his aide managed to swim to safety but both the women died and their bodies were fished out by the rescue teams. The victims were rushed to the MB hospital where the bodies were shifted to the mortuary, police said.

According to the police, the mishap took place at 7.45 am on Monday when the driver and his aide were returning to Kherwara after delivering a consignment of milk to Gandhai village. Midway the mother daughter duo boarded the vehicle for Kherwara but after a few kilometres at Chittora bridge, the incident took place.

The driver took the risk of crossing the bridge even though the water was already flowing over it. No sooner than the vehicle had started crossing the bridge it got swept away.

A team of Kherwara police, along with senior police officials, rushed to the scene and launched the rescue operation. After the driver and his aide came out of the river alive, the police teams and locals started searching for the two women. After two hours, the bodies were found inside the vehicle, police added.

Recently, in a similar incident, a sub-division magistrate (SDM) was swept away in a swollen river along with his official vehicle and driver when they were trying to cross it in Banswara district of Rajasthan.

Kushalgarh SDM Rameshwar Dayal Meena was on his way to the office from the district headquarters when his car got stuck in Bari River near Kalinjara village. As he and his driver got down from the car, they were swept away by a sudden flow of water.

“The driver managed to swim to safety,” Banswara SP Kalu Ram Rawat said. The SDM’s body was later fished out.
