With the arrest of 85 people, the Udaipur police on Tuesday claimed to have busted the state’s biggest gambling racket, being run in a hotel at Bicchiwara in Dungarpur district near Gujarat border.

In the raid conducted at Hotel Signature on Monday night, the police also seized ₹45 lakh cash, said additional superintendent of police, headquarters, Brijesh Soni. Entries in registers recovered from the hotel indicated that the gamblers had put more than ₹10 crore at stake, he added.

The Udaipur range police are running ‘Eye and Ears’ scheme to check crime.

Soni said that inspector general of police (IGP), Udaipur range, Anand Srivastava had received a tip-off that a gambling racket was being run at Hotel Signature in the Bhicchiwara area.

Following the tip-off, a police team raided the hotel on Monday night and arrested 85 people, most of them Gujarati businessmen. The police also seized ₹45 lakh cash and a few registers with entries worth more than ₹10 crore, said Soni, adding that the hotel also served liquor to the gamblers in violation of the norms.

The police suspect that the racket was being run in collusion with some local police and administration officials.

The arrested people were booked under various sections of the IPC. Further investigations were on.
