staff at a governmentrun hospital who on Thursday staged a sit-in demonstration demanding the reinstatement of a colleague, called off the protest later in the day following assurance from the hospital authorities that the nurse will be reinstated.

Days after a woman gave birth to a child outside the Jaipuriya hospital in Jaipur, the nurse was removed on Wednesday after she was found guilty of medical negligence, following an enquiry ordered by the state government.

“The principal medical officer and others assured us that the nurse will be reinstated after which we resumed work,” said Chandra Shekhar Sharma, president Jaipuriya Hospital Karamchari Samanvay Samiti.

Ashoka Bai, a heavily pregnant nomadic woman, was brought to the hospital by her family members late last Friday, but a doctor on duty refused to admit her while assessing that the delivery of the child was not likely to take place during the night.

The family members took the woman outside the hospital, where she gave birth to a child.

On being alerted, the police reached the spot and the woman and the newborn were later admitted to another hospital at Sanganer.

After the incident came to light, the state health minister ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed the district chief medical and health officer to submit a report about the incident.

State health minister Kalicharan Saraf said the nurse has been put under APO (awaiting posting order) status after a five-member committee found her guilty of negligence.
