Students of classes 1 to 9 at the Government Girl’s School in Rishabhdeo are unable to write English correctly exposing the awful standard of education.

District collector Bishnu Charan Mallick during his surprise visit to the school on Wednesday found that the students of senior classes cannot write English correctly.

During the visit, he asked class 9 students to write English alphabets, but they could not write them.

Besides, the collector learnt that students of class 7 are not having a math teacher for long.

When Mallick asked school principal Jaimala Kharadi, she tried to convince him by saying there was no need to have a separate math teacher for class 7 as any teacher can teach the subject.

Outraged over the situation, the collector directed the principal to make proper arrangement and lay emphasis on improving quality of education.

Later, the collector took a class to teach the students alphabets and told them way to calculate distance between their school and homes by giving a live demonstration.

While talking to HT, Mallick said: “Not having a math teacher is not a big issue, my concern is that class 9 students cannot even write English alphabets correctly... Soon, a math teacher will be appointed in the school.”

“I have not taken strict action against any of the teachers as to give them a chance to improve the level of education,” the collector said.

According to the Annual Status of Education Report - 2016, 66.3% children of class 1 from rural Rajasthan could not even read capital letters in English. In addition, nearly 30% students of class 8 could not read simple words such as man, big, pen etc. The survey covered some 37,000 students in 985 villages in all 33 districts of Rajasthan.

In rural India, 53.2% students of class 1 could not read capital letters of English.
