A 30-year-old man of Sikar district in Rajasthan has been booked for allegedly murdering a married Dalit woman and dumping her body in a field that belongs to the father of the accused.

According to the police, the woman, Sanjana Devi, 40, went missing on August 5 and a missing report was lodged by her family members. Devi’s 17-year-old son said, “My mother couldn’t be found since August 5 and after contacting all relatives, we filed a missing report on August 8 at the Sri Madhopur police station.”

The woman’s family, which lives at Mau village in Sikar district, had named Kailash Chand Yadav, an upper caste man, who lives in a nearby village, as a suspect in the case. On August 11, the decomposed body of Devi was recovered from a field owned by Laduram Yadav, the father of Kailash Chand Yadav, in the nearby Koduwale village.

“The postmortem report said that the cause of death was stabbing,” said Rajendra Singh Beniwal, circle officer, Reengus.

Activists have slammed the police for delayed action in the case.

However, the police said that the accused is currently absconding and efforts are being made to trace him.

“His (Kailash Chand Yadav’s) phone is switched off, but we are trying to ascertain his location through other means. Further investigation is on in the case,” said Beniwal.
