11 more die in Assam floods, toll rises to 60

LIVING IN 488 RELIEF CAMPS SET UP IN 15 DISTRICTS OF THE STATE

Though flood water has started receding in some areas in the past 24 hours, 11 more people lost their lives taking the total figure in the second deluge this season to 60.

Twenty of the state’s 33 districts still continue to remain affected.

On Friday, 11 deaths took place in eight of the affected districts due to drowning and electrocut­ion. The total number of deaths due to floods since July when the first deluge hit the state rose to 144.

Moreover, nearly 26 lakh people continue to remain affected as 2,210 villages are inundated.

Over 90,000 displaced are still living in 488 relief camps in 15 districts.

Currently, the Brahmaputr­a river is flowing above the danger marks at Guwahati, Nimatighat in Jorhat, Tezpur in Sonitpur, Goalpara and Dhubri towns.

Other rivers like the Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat, Jia Bharali at NT Road Crossing in Sonitpur, Kopili at Dharamtul in Nagaon, Beki at Road Bridge in Barpeta and Kushiyara at Karimganj town are flowing above their danger marks.

On Friday, 1,267 people were evacuated from inundated areas and taken to safer places. Over 1.22 lakh hectares of crop area are damaged.

However, flood waters have started coming down at Kaziranga National Park.

According to state disaster management authority, 38% of the park’s total area are still under water.

Meanwhile, the Indian Railways said it has begun restoratio­n work of damaged rail tracks and bridges to restart train services as soon as possible.
