Dera chief talks of ‘selfless service’ as followers pour into Panchkula

- Aastha Sharma letters@hindustantimes.com

As thousands of Dera Sacha Sauda followers poured into Panchkula, raising tension in the tricity, Dera head Gurmeet Ram Rahim, ironically, took to Twitter to talk about “selfless service, meditation and spirituality.”

In his tweet, Ram Rahim gives a link to a Facebook video of one of his sermons. In the comment section, a number of followers can be seen commenting about the verdict date.

Ram Rahim is an accused in a rape case, the verdict of which will be pronounced by a special CBI court in Panchkula on August 25. In an apparent show of strength, Dera followers or ‘premis’ as they call themselves have been reaching Panchkula in droves. Around 50,000 dera followers had converged on Panchkula by Wednesday morning, with more expected to follow suit.

“25 august ko 25 januaury ki trh mnayenge. Khushiyan mnayenge nachenge gayenge jhoomenge ladoo khayenge (sic). (We will celebrate August 25 like January 25. We will celebrate and will distribute laddoos. ,” wrote a user Suman Insan.

“Pitaji just grant us one wish. On August 25, the truth shall come out in front of everyone,” Kaali Insaan wrote on Facebook. “Pitaji 25 ko ba-izzat bari honge (Pitaji will be absolved of all charges on August 25),” a user Angrez Bathla commented.

A quick look at the post shows only positive comments, almost all of them praising Ram Rahim. This seems to be quite an anomaly on a platform as potent as Facebook where even the most positive of stories start attracting snide remarks in no time.

Jealous of her friend’s better grades in exams, a Class 8 student of a private Madhya Pradesh school allegedly poisoned her and then attempted suicide .

According to police sources, the victim complained of uneasiness when she returned from school on Monday and then started vomiting. She was rushed to a hospital where she is undergoing treatment and is reported to be stable.

After admitting their daughter to the hospital, the girl’s parents lodged a complaint with the school authorities. When school officials went through the CCTV footage of the girl’s classroom, they reportedly saw the accused pouring mosquito repellent into the victim’s water bottle.

“In the CCTV footage of the classroom, the accused girl was seen pouring the mosquito repellent into her classmate’s water bottle and then hiding it inside the bag of another student,” news agency PTI quoted Civil Lines police station in-charge Bhupendra Singh as saying.

When confronted with the evidence, the accused allegedly told the police that she had attempted to poison her classmate because she scored higher marks than her in exams.

Guilt-ridden and fearing police inquiry, the accused consumed phenol on Tuesday after which she was admitted to a hospital. A doctor at the district hospital said her condition was serious but she was stable

Satna SP Rajesh Hingankar said that they were going to register a case under Section 328 of IPC (causing hurt by means of poison) against the accused.

“We are still investigating why she poisoned her friend. We are not very satisfied with her answers ,” Hingankar said.
