The Jaipur police have rescued a class 10 student, who had gone to Mumbai to play the Blue Whale challenge — an Internet-based suicide game— and was about to hurt himself.

According to the police, the 16-year-old boy has been missing since August 21 and a case of kidnapping had been registered at the Karni Vihar police station following his disappearance.

“We found him outside Churchgate station and brought him home on Friday. A knife, which he had bought in Mumbai was with him,” said Mahaveer Singh, station house officer, Karni Vihar police station.

“A special team was created to trace the boy and we started questioning his family and friends in school to know more about him. We learned that he had mentioned the Blue Whale challenge to his friends in school,” Ashok Gupta, deputy commissioner of police, west, said.

The police said that the boy had allegedly tried to convince his friends to join him in playing the game before disappearing.

“We started analyzing his call details and mobile locations before coming to know that he had gone to Sawai Madhopur district. After reaching there, we learned that he had used the internet from Mumbai,” said Singh.

The police said a team was sent to Mumbai to bring the boy home.

DCP Gupta told HT that the boy had played the first few levels of the lethal game.

“In the next level, he was supposed to hurt himself with the knife. Preliminary investigation suggests that it was not the last stage of the game, where one is required to commit suicide,” said Gupta.

The police said that the boy is an introvert and came to know about the game from online.

“He will be presented before the child welfare committee (CWC) who will decide if he can return home now,” said SHO Singh.
