RU students take up extra courses to contest polls
University of Rajasthan students who are keen to contest elections take up an odd combination of courses so that they are on the rolls of the university to be eligible to contest students’ union polls.
Academic records of the candidates have revealed that a number students who are contesting the polls , are pursuing their second masters degrees, some have switched courses from science to arts. Although educational experts are promoting interdisciplinary movement, a very high rate of movement among the candidates in the fray suggests there are other reasons.
Among the eight presidential candidates, Sanjay Macheri, the candidate of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), chose to do an MA in public administration after completing his bachelor of computer applications. He is currently doing MA in philosophy.
Similarly, Pawan Yadav, the rebel ABVP candidate did an MA in public administration after a BSc degree. He too is pursuing a second masters at present.
Rahul Bhakar, rebel candidate from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), is doing an LLB after completing his bachelor’s in technology. Deepak Meena, the NSUI candidate is doing an MA in sociology after an MA in public administration.
The candidate of Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti—the student wing of Aam Aadmi Party-did an LLB after an MA in political science.
Vishvender Singh is currently doing a postgraduate diploma in labour law. Dilip Kumar Meena, an independent candidate, is doing MA in Rajasthani language, literature and culture, after completing an undergraduate degree in commerce.
The trend not limited among the candidates for the presidential post but there are contestants for other three posts –the vice president, general secretary and joint secretary—who too are pursuing additional post graduation degree courses .
The polls are slated for August 28, except for those in the Udaipur division. and the results of the elections will be declared on September 4.
