New techniques to treat prolapse, endometriosis
Doctors from New Delhi on Saturday showcased a new technique to treat conditions such as prolapse of the uterus and endometriosis in women that can lead to impairing bowel and bladder functions and infertility.
Dr Hafiz Rehman and Dr Nikita Trehan of Sunrise Hospital demonstrated the technique at the ongoing third Indo Global Endogynaec summit 2017, organised by the Association of Gynaec Endoscopic surgeons of Rajasthan and Jaipur Doorbeen hospital. The conference is being attended by more than 200 gynecologists and surgeons from all over India.
The doctors operated on two women using these techniques.
Dr Rehman said prolapse of the uterus happens when the uterus sags into the vagina.
It is common among women above 40 years, especially among those who have had a normal delivery or have chronic cough, constipation or incontinence. Endometriosis is a condition in which the layer of tissue that normally covers the inside of the uterus grows outside it, most commonly on the ovaries or fallopian tubes.
He said the traditional treatment for this is vaginal repair surgery, but in about 50 percent cases the surgery does not help.
Dr Trehan said, “We are using a new technique called laproscopic mesh sacrocolpopexy in which a mesh is placed to support the uterus so that it does not sag into the vagina. To give support to the uterus or vagina, the mesh is joined to the tailbone.”
“Since the surgery is done through laparoscopy there is very little blood loss and the patient can be discharged after one day and can continue a normal lifestyle. This surgery also offers an alternative to those women who do not want to get a hysterectomy,” said Dr Trehan.
