case has been registered against a minor boy for allegedly molesting an eight-year-old girl in the city’s Jhotwara neighbourhood on Tuesday, police said.

The case was lodged by the family members of the girl after the incident, said Gur Bhupendra Singh, station house officer of Jhotwara police station.

“In the complaint, the family members alleged that the victim was playing in a park while her mother was standing nearby when the incident took place. The accused was sleeping near the slide on which the girl was playing,” he said. The girl’s mother allegedly saw the 17-year-old accused touching her daughter inappropriately, police said.

“We have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and further investigation is on,” said Singh. The accused is yet to be detained, police said.

The accused, who is a minor, has said that he asked the girl to stop playing near the slide as he was sleeping and had tried to stop her. The family members of the girl, however, have levelled a molestation charge against the accused, police said.

According to the state home department data, 5,995 cases of sexual violence against young girls have been registered in Rajasthan in the last three years.

Charge-sheets have been filed in 4,946 cases. The government has taken no action against investigating officers who have failed to file charge-sheets.
