Police inaction leads to Dalit rape victim’s suicide

28-year-old Dalit rape victim in Barmer committed suicide after the police allegedly didn’t take any action in the case forcing the victim to take the extreme step.

The victim’s family also alleged that the accused has been threatenin­g them and pressuring them to withdraw the police case. They claimed that considerin­g the threat from the accused, they met the district police chief several times and demanded protection, but were ignored.

The victim had filed a case at Chohtan police station on July 24 alleging that accused, identified as Lakh Singh and Tan Singh, residents of Booth Rathoran, had kidnapped her from her home on July 22 and raped her.

On basis of the victim’s FIR, police have filed the case under section 458, 366 and 376 of IPC and started their investigat­ion.

The victim’s father-in-law alleged that though the police have started an investigat­ion, they have not arrested the accused. He alleged that the accused had support from the police and have been threatenin­g them and asking them to withdraw their complaint.

He alleged that under pressure from the accused and with no help coming from the police, the victim committed suicide by jumping into a water tank late on Monday night.

The victim’s father-in-law had filed a case at Chohtan police station against five people (the accused and their relatives) alleging police inaction in the matter.

Till the time of filing the report, the victim’s family members have refused to accept the body till the arrest of the accused. They have also demanded action against the erring cops.
