Army takes note of latest ‘atrocity’ tape

Days after a video footage showing Indian army soldiers stepping on bodies of two militants in Kashmir, army on Saturday said it has taken cognizance and promised “suitable action”.

The video purportedly shows soldiers stepping on the faces of the bodies of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants Abu Ismail and his associate, Abu Kasim, who were killed in an encounter earlier this week but no official has yet commented as to who are the militants in the video.

Videos of alleged atrocities and human rights violations of Kashmiris have dominated the narrative this year in the strifetorn Valley.

In April, a video emerged of a group of Kashmiri youth heckling CRPF jawans returning from duty on the day of Srinagar by-polls on April 9 and resulted in a national outrage.

What followed was a torrent of videos showing security forces committing atrocities and human rights excesses on civilians, including using a “human shield” by the army and the targeted shooting of a teenage stone pelter on the day of the by-poll.

Activists in Kashmir say that such acts are offensive according to international protocols on armed conflicts. HTC
