by her elder brother for her addiction to social networking sites, a 17-year-old girl took her own life in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The incident occurred on Friday evening near Habra, about 45 km away from Kolkata.

According to district police officers, she announced her death on her WhatsApp status before killing herself.

Mampi Das, a student of Kaminikumar Girls’ High School, hanged herself in her room with her dupatta.

“Family members do forbid adolescents to ensure their welfare. But mere scolding won’t do. If the girl was adamant, she could have been taken for counselling,” Sunanda Mukherjee, former chairperson of state women’s commission, told the media.

Das would be constantly busy with social networking platforms on her phone, inviting the ire of her family members. On Thursday, too, her elder brother Dulal Das chided her for being hooked to the phone all the time.

On Friday evening, the girl took advantage of her family members being away to a hospital to visit a relative who was admitted there. Then they returned none opened the door. Peeping through the window, they found Das hanging.

They broke open the door and rushed her to Habra State General Hospital, where the doctors had declared her dead.
