Kaskar, 2 aides sent to 10 days’ judicial custody
Iqbal Kaskar, brother of India’s most wanted underworld fugitive Dawood Ibrahim, and two of his associates were sent to police custody till September 27. Thane police will now probe if Dawood had a stake in the extortion business that was being run.
Parambir Singh, Thane police commissioner, said that builders had complained of threats being issued in Dawood’s name. And there were instances where shooters from outside Maharashtra were brought to forcibly grab land or properties.
Singh said that Iqbal Kaskar, Mumtaz Shaikh and Israr Siddique were arrested based on a complaint from a Thane-based builder. Kaskar, in fact, was arrested from his sister Haseena Parkar’s residence in Dongri while he was having biryani and watching television, said Singh. “He had no inkling that he was going to be arrested,” said Singh.
Names of some politicians, including corporators, too have cropped up during investigation, added Singh but refused to divulge further details.
Kaskar had illegally taken four houses from a builder and had been demanding more. “The builder had approached Kaskar in the past to settle a dispute pertaining to a plot. And Kaskar had demanded four houses in return for the settlement. But Kaskar pushed for one more property which made the builder approach us,” said a police officer, investigating the case. “We are interrogating the accused and more arrests are likely in the case,” added the officer.
In 2015, Kaskar was arrested by Mumbai police after a real estate agent Salim Sheikh had lodged a complaint claiming Kaskar and his men had demanded ₹3 lakh and had thrashed him.
The Sikar police have arrested the director and teacher of a private school for allegedly gang-raping an 18-year-old student and tricking her family to conduct an abortion when she became pregnant last month.
The two accused have been identified as Jagdish Yadav, the director, and Jagat Singh Gurjar, the teacher, said police.
“We are interrogating them. Further action will be taken after recording their statements and also on the basis of the statements by the victim’s family members,” said Vinit Kumar, superintendent of police, Sikar.
The family of the girl — who is recuperating at a hospital in Jaipur — registered a case at Ajeetgarh police station on Sunday.
“The family members said the accused used to call the victim to the school for extra classes, where they allegedly gang-raped her. The victim had started experiencing stomach pain last month,” Kushal Singh, circle officer, Neem Ka Thana, had told HT on Monday.
The police said after visiting a doctor the family discovered that the girl was pregnant.
They added the family members of the girl alleged the accused tricked them into getting an abortion done as they were under the impression that it was just an operation.
The police had also recorded the statements of two doctors at a hospital in Shahpura where the abortion allegedly took place.
