person was killed and another seriously injured after a low-floor bus collided with a motorcycle near the Kanak Ghati neighbourhood of the city on Tuesday morning, police said.

The incident took place at 11am, said Indraj, a head constable with the accident police station (north).

“The low -floor bus was coming from the direction of the Amer Fort and the bike was coming from the opposite direction,” he said.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that both the vehicles collided from the driver’s side,” he said.

A crowd gathered at the spot after the accident and the police were informed.

“We rushed to the spot and took the injured to the hospital. The bus driver was absconding,” said Indraj.

The two men have been identified as Firoz and Mujib, residents of Amer’s Handipura neighbourhood of the city, police said.

“Both of them were admitted at the SMS Hospital where one of the injured, Firoz later died. He had his engagement in the evening and had gone out with his relative Mujib to a shop when the accident took place,” said the head constable.

The low-floor bus has been confiscated and a case will be registered against the driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, police said.

Low-floor buses in the city continue to be involved in road accidents, often resulting in deaths of people.

Last month, a college student from Sikar district was injured and another man died when a driver of a low -floor bus lost control and hit them near the Jaipur Municipal Corporation.

The condition of low-floor buses are checked everyday before they start from the depot but it was learnt that on the day of the accident, the bus was not checked.

Another such incident was witnessed in June when a lowfloor bus killed one and injured three people on the Tonk Road after its brakes had failed.

The driver reportedly jumped from the bus after he could not control the vehicle, which lead to a number passengers also leaping from the vehicle.

The low-floor buses have to cover a particular stretch of distance in a stipulated time period and the bus drivers often compete among each other to pick up the maximum number of passengers, which result in reckless driving and fatal accidents, police said.
