Eve-teasing incidents down in Jaipur

Unlike its counterpart in Uttar Pradesh, the anti-Romeo squad of Rajasthan has not just stayed out of controversy, but also succeeded in nabbing 160 eve-teasers in Jaipur in the past four months. As a result, the eveteasing incidents are on decline in the city.

The lady police patrolling squad, comprising 52 constables, was formed in May to ensure the safety of women in public places. The squad members, divided into 26 teams, patrol various spots of the city on scooters to curb the harassment of women and girls.

The eve-teasing incidents have come down in parks and malls that were notorious for the incidents. According to the official records, the team booked 43 men in May, 46 in June, 41 in July and 31 in August. The numbers show a declining trend, except in June. The declining trend may continue in September also, said the officials.

“Most eve-teasing incidents take place in crowded locations such as Chandpole, Badi Chaupar, Jawahar Circle, Johri Bazaar and the university,” additional DCP (control room) Kamal Shekhawat told HT.

The constables have been trained to drive two-wheelers and have also been given lessons in martial arts and other modes of combat. The vehicles come with a large array of facilities, including inbuilt mobile chargers in their carriers. Apart from it, the women have also been equipped with first-aid boxes, batons, wireless systems and flashlights.

Unlike the anti-Romeo squad of UP, the lady cops do not shame the offenders in public. “In case the offender is a minor, we call the family members to the police station and give them counselling. Other offenders are produced in the court,” said Shekhawat.

The police uniform for lady patrol squad has been replaced with an all-blue uniform that makes them instantly recognizable. The squad has also visited schools and colleges to create awareness among the girl students about using protection apps and helpline numbers in case of any emergency.
