The Tripura government might constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder of journalist Shantanu Bhowmik on September 20 in Mandwai.

The decision came after the Agartala Press Club placed the demand before chief minister Manik Sarkar.

The delegation of the club’s managing committee also requested that the trial be conducted in a fast-track court.

Meeting Sarkar at his official residence on Sunday, the delegation also demanded compensation for Bhowmick’s family, provision of special jackets for photo and video journalists, protection for scribes on duty, and a ban on the misuse of “press” sticker on vehicles.

“The chief minister has assured to take positive steps,” secretary of Agartala Press Club, Kalyanjit Singh, said. He agreed to discuss with the administration the proposal to set up an SIT.

Meanwhile, a delegation of scribes from nine media organizations visited Bhowmik’s home and assured his family that they would continue to seek justice for his murder.

Representing the media organisations, Subal Dey, editor of a local daily, said the journalists would light candles in front of Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan at 6 pm over the coming weeks to press for their demands.

On Saturday night, the police arrested a youth, Sachin Debbarma, on suspicion of his involvement in the murder. Debbarma is allegedly a supporter of The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT).

Police said IPFT supporters surrounded the Mandwai police station after the arrest of Debbarma and demanded his release. On Thursday, they arrested two youth in connection with the case.

“It is an airborne infection that spreads through droplets in the air. The risk of catching infection increases in large gatherings or schools where even a single person can pass on the infection to others,” said Dr Srikant Sharma, consultant, department of medicine, Moolchand Hospital. “The infection usually spreads when a healthy person comes in close contact with an infected person and particularly touches his nose, eyes or mouth,” he added.

Also, about 40% deaths and 50% infections were reported among patients in the 20-50 age group. “The reason why young people get infected more is because they move a lot within the community and the virus is also circulating there,” said a Union health ministry official.

The numbers this year are inching towards the 42,592 cases tally in 2015, when India recorded the highest number of flu cases. The new influenza virus from Mexico was declared a global pandemic by the WHO in 2009, when India reported 20,604 cases and 1,763 deaths. Among the worst affected states are Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The national capital also reported 2,755 cases with six deaths.
