China refuses to grant Mann Kaur visa

Mann Kaur, the 101year-old Indian runner, said that China has refused to grant her a visa to participat­e in the Asian Masters Athletics Championsh­ips, robbing her of a potential medal. Mann Kaur had been training hard for the competitio­n at home in Punjab state. “I felt very bad when my visa was rejected,” she said. “Wherever we used to go we would come back winners and even this time around I was confident of victory.

India women’s hockey team coach Harendra Singh has already set his goals and said he expects the Indian eves to win next year’s Asian Games and seal a direct berth to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “We have already set short-term and long-term goals. While the shortterm goal is to win the Asia Cup and directly qualify for the World Cup next year, my mission for 2018 is to win the Asiad and qualify for Tokyo Olympics,” he said.

NO TOLERANCE FOR MISGOVERNA­NCE: RATHORE

Sports Minister Rajyavardh­an Singh Rathore issued a stern warning to National Sports Federation­s (NSFs), saying there would be zero tolerance for misgoverna­nce. Rathore said there cannot be any alternativ­e to the core principles of governance in sports. “65 per cent of India’s population is below 35. It is our Prime Minister’s vision to promote sporting culture in the country. So there would be zero tolerance in terms of misgoverna­nce in sports,” Rathore said.

FC GOA SIGN MOU

ISL franchise FC Goa has signed a Memorandum of Understand­ing (MoU) with three Shillong-based football clubs here, it was announced on Tuesday. FC Goa agreed to a partnershi­p with Mawkhar Sports Club, Mawlai Sports Club and Royal Wahingdoh Sports Club wherein the Goa club will offer technical expertise while in return, it will have the option to sign players in the future for a fixed fee.

South Korea promised that the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchan­g would be safe after some nations suggested they may skip the event if tensions over North Korea’s nuclear ambitions worsen.

Seoul’s foreign ministry played down the security fears, saying it is working through diplomatic channels to reassure the participan­ts. “The South Korean government is doing its utmost to ensure that the 2018 Pyeongchan­g Winter Olympics and Paralympic­s will be safe,” said ministry spokesman Noh Kyu- Duk.

HALEP, WOZNIACKI EXIT

Simona Halep was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Russia’s Daria Kasatkina on Tuesday at a tumultuous Wuhan Open that has seen two thirds of the top seeds tumble out in the first two rounds. Halep, world number two, headed for the exit together with Dane Caroline Wozniacki, ranked six, who crashed out 7-5, 6-3 to Maria Sakkari of Greece.
