Sometimes, he was Sanjay Kumar Govardhan, sometimes Sanjay Sharma and other times Captain Mishra.

Using 10 such fake identities, a 30-year-old merchant navy cadet duped 50 people by promising them jobs.

Earlier this year, the Mumbai police received a complaint from the Rajasthan police regarding missing merchant navy official Sanjay Kumar Bishnoi.

The same name cropped up in a complaint at the RCF police station in connection with a cheating case.

Sachin Sanap, sub-inspector, RCF police station, said a receptionist from a private hospital at Chembur told them that Bishnoi had duped her of ₹2 lakh on the pretext of giving her husband a job in the merchant navy.

“The woman told us that Bishnoi was a sweet talker. He befriended her at the hospital where he was undergoing treatment, and duped her two months ago,” said Sanap.

The police had received a tipoff that Bishnoi lived at Shell Colony in Chembur.

When a team reached the spot, they saw that his door was locked from the outside, but could hear a woman inside.

“We waited and laid a trap. When Bishnoi came home two hours later, we arrested him. He had been living with his girlfriend, who was unaware that he was running a job racket,” said Sanap.

Bishnoi told the police he was working with navy from 2012 to 2015.

He said he left Rajsthan without officially resigning and began targeting people in Mumbai. He confessed to having duped people of ₹20 lakh.

Bishnoi was arrested for cheating and impersonation under sections of the IPC.

In August, four people were arrested for selling fake certificates for jobs in Merchant Navy. They had cheated more than 500 people.
