Section 144 imposed in parts of Banswara district after murder
JAIPUR:A SOHRAB KHAN, WHO WAS AT THE HELM OF THE ANJUMAN ISLAMIA ORGANIZATION, WAS SHOT DEAD ON SATURDAY EVENING
day after the murder of a religious leader in Banswara, section 144 has been imposed in parts of the district to maintain law and order, police said on Sunday.
According to the police, Sohrab Khan, who was at the helm of the Anjuman Islamia organization was shot dead by an unidentified assailant on Saturday evening.
“The incident took place a little after 6 pm on Saturday when Khan was sitting at a tea stall near a lake in Banswara. A man shot at him. At this time it isn’t clear if the assailant had other associates,” said Govind Singh, station house officer, Banswara police station.
The police said the preliminary investigation suggests that personal enmity could be the motive behind the murder.
Khan, who was grievously injured, was referred to a hospital in Udaipur where he died later during the night, said officials.
“Preliminary investigation suggests the involvement of a man called Siraj Ahmed who has a prior criminal record and is currently wanted in a murder case. The family of the deceased has also accused Ahmed of masterminding the attack,” said Banswara superintendent of police, Kalu Ram Rawat.
The police said that according to mobile-based location search, Ahmed appears to be outside India.
“Ahmed’s location is coming as Nepal according to our investigation. A few years ago, Khan’s brother was also attacked and we suspect that both the events are related,” said Rawat.
The police said that three people have been detained and they are being interrogated to know more about the incident.
“Ahmed was also one of those arrested in relation to the attack on Khan’s brother a few years ago,” the SP said.
