Lahiri off to a flying start in CIMB Classic, SSP falters

Anirban Lahiri got off to a flying start with a five-under 67 in the first round to be at tied-8th in the CIMB Classic at the TPC Kuala Lumpur here on Thursday. Fellow Indian, SSP Chawrasia (72) was tied-44th.

Lahiri, third last year at the same event, is coming off a tied9th finish in the last start on the PGA Tour in the BMW Championsh­ips, the third leg of the FedEx Cup play-offs. Lahiri is three shots behind Australian Cameron Smith, who holds the lead. Smith shot an error-free 64 with five birdies on front nine and three on back nine.

Lahiri, playing the CIMB Classic for the sixth time, has great affinity for the TPC Kuala Lumpur, which till 2015 was called the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, when he won the 2015 Malaysian Open.

DEBORAH QUALIFIES

India’s Deborah Herold and Aleena Reji have qualified for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup to be held in Manchester, England from November 10-12. The Indian duo obtained enough points to enter into the qualifying rounds of UCI Cycling World Cup events following their strong show in the Track Asia Cup here.

Deborah and Aleena will participat­e in team sprint event as well as keirin and individual sprint event in the World Cup.

INDIA SHUTTLERS LOSE

Indian shuttlers suffered a 0-3 loss against Malaysia in the quarterfin­als of World Junior Mixed Team Championsh­ips on Thursday. Eng Cheong Ng and Sueh Jeou Tan of Malaysia beat India’s Dhruv Kapila and UK Mithula 21-18, 21-10 in mixed doubles.

Lakshya Sen found the going tough against Jun Hao Leong, losing 13-21,15-21 in men’s singles, while Ashmita Chaliha lost 12-21, 12-21 to Goh Jin Wei in women’s singles.
