deputy superintendent of police (DySP) in Gwalior ran over roadside vendors while driving allegedly in a drunken state in Birla Nagar on Saturday. Two vendors, Vishnu and Mahesh Pal, were injured in the incident.

The angry locals caught hold of the officer, RS Mohnia, who is posted as DySP at Police Training School, Tighra, Gwalior, and beat him up. The public tore his clothes and paraded him with shoes on his head.

Reports said the senior police officer begged for mercy with folded hands, but the enraged locals did not let him go and even shot a video of the incident which was being widely shared online. Police rushed to the scene to rescue the officer from the crowd.

Abhishek Tiwari, additional superintendent of police (ASP), Gwalior, said a case has been registered against Mohnia under IPC sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).

A medical examination of the officer was conducted following which he was released on bail.
