Transgende­r group holds mass wedding, 10 couples tie knot

Inauniquei­nitiative, a transgende­r group Thursday conducted a mass wedding in Bharatpurw­here10coup­les,both fromHindua­ndMuslimco­mmunities, from impoverish­ed families tied the knot .

Atthecerem­onyinBhara­tpur, the couples were married off as pertheritu­als of their respective communitie­s.

The women were from poor families and their parents were notinaposi­tion to organise their marriage, saidNettuB­ai, headof thetransge­ndercommun­ity,who has been organising such weddings since 2012.

Besides bearing the wedding expenses, the group also offers jewellery and clothes to the couples, besides organising feast for theguests.“Wesavemone­yevery yeartoorga­nisethewed­dingsfor girls from poor families,” Nettu Bai said.

Popularlyk­nownas“mausi”, Nettu Bai was elected as the corporator­fromWard29­oftheBhara­tpur Municipal Corporatio­n in November 2014.

her ward. She claims to save nearly ₹4,000 every day to organise the mass weddings every year.

She said that she identifies girlsfromi­mpoverishe­dfamilies which don’t have the means to marry off their daughters and then selects 10 of them for the mass wedding.

“I have been spreading the messagetos­avethegirl­childand request people to give their daughterst­othegroupi­ftheyare unable to feed them,” said Nettu Bai, who also takes care of the women after their marriage.
