Policeman shot at, injured by militants in Anantnag district

Militants on Thursday shot at and injured a policeman in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

The ultras shot at special police officer Ranbir Singh, who was posted on duty near deputy commission­er’s office, a police office said. He added that Singh, who was hit by a bullet in the abdomen, was taken to 92 Base Hospital of the Army here.

SEARCH OPS IN KASHMIR

Security forces on Thursday launched cordon and search operations at multiple places in south and central Kashmir as part of efforts to flush out militants from the Valley, police said. The anti-militancy operations are going on in over a dozen villages in Shopian, Anantnag and Pulwama districts of south Kashmir and in some parts of Budgam district in central Kashmir, a police official said. “House to house searches are going on but so far no arrests have been made,” the official said. The three districts of south Kashmir along with Kulgam are worst affected by the recent surge in militant activities, the official said.

13 JAWANS INJURED

13 army jawans were injured when their vehicle plunged into a deep gorge near Rattanbass on Jammu-Srinagar national highway, near Ramban on Wednesday evening.

Police said, around 7pm, an army vehicle of 12 Rashtriya Rifles on a routine patrol duty, overturned and rolled down into a deep gorge near Rattanbass, after the driver lost control.

The mishap occurred at an under constructi­on four-lane bridge and 13 jawans were injured in the incident.

Twelve labourers engaged in the bridge constructi­on also had a narrow escape.

Soon after the incident, locals along with police rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. All the injured were shifted to a government hospital in Banihal. Later, five of the critically injured were airlifted to Command hospital in Udhampur.
