Scarlett was just two months old when someone grabbed her during Holi, amid the chaos of music and colour, and smeared gulal on her. “Since then, anytime loud music plays, she gets spoo-ked,” says Divya Sanbhwami about her 10-month-old kitten.

Two months ago, Sanbhwami, 22, a graphic designer from Mumbai, heard that NGO Animals Matter To Me (AMTM) had created a woofer that plays soothing music to calm cats and dogs during festivals and storms.

“I thought it would be just the thing for Scarlett,” she says.

“I didn’t get the gadget because she’s too tiny for it, but I downloaded the free tunes and play them for her on my phone.”

The woofer was created by AMTM founder Ganesh Nayak in association with digital marketing agency Tonic Worldwide, with music composed specially for canines by musician Siddharth Basrur.

“We tested different kinds of instrumental music on

150 dogs at my rehab centre for strays and found a mix of flute, water and pan pipe sounds to be most effective,” says Nayak.

While the woofer has to be bought, the music has been posted online for free.

A happy customer that uses both is Pumpkin, an adopted stray dog who became a music lover this Diwali.

“AMTM was distributing the gadgets for free trials, so I borrowed one,” says Maneesha Yadav, 28. “It helped Pumpkin get through the crackers without whimpering and hiding.”
