The number of girls awarded the gold medal were more than the number of boys at the fourth convocation of Central University of Rajasthan on Monday. Out of the 22 students shortlisted to receive the gold medal, 17 were girls. A total of 476 students were awarded degrees for completing their studies in various disciplines. Additional principal secretary to Prime Minister, PK Mishra, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Central University of Rajasthan has been shortlisted under Prime Minister’s scheme to develop 12 higher educational institutions of the country into institution of eminence, said university vice chancellor A K Pujari.

Four girls were presented the Armstrong award for the first time instituted by Armstrong. The award has been instituted only for girls who excel on site works in interior designing. The award carries Rs 11,000 for a girl ranking first and Rs 5,000 for the one in the second position.

Pujari also raised the issue of water problem faced by the university. “The water supplied by the government is not enough to meet our demand and there are is no ground water in the area either. We have asked the government to look into our problem”, he said.

“Change in convocation dress is a sign of returning to our cultural roots”, said Mishra. “We had the practice back in the Vedic times when the teacher used to advise his disciples before they left the Gurukul.”
