Singh was to visit home in January
dreamt of becoming a lawyer, 21-yearold Dharmpreet Singh Jassar of Khothra village in Banga sub-division, who was shot dead in California in the United States on Tuesday night, had planned to visit his home town in January after completing his education.
His relatives, who are in shock, said that Singh was the only son and was supposed to start handling the family transport business.
Singh had moved to the USA in February 2015 to pursue his law degree, with the family spending ₹8 lakh. They had high hopes that the victim would come back in three years and help in the family business.
Singh lived with his paternal grandparents, who had settled there a few years ago. He worked as a store clerk at a grocery store at a petrol pump in Madera city, his family here said. Singh was shot by four assistants, who came to loot the store in Madera city, California, on Tuesday night, local time.
Singh’s parents, twin sisters and other family members came to know about his death on Wednesday morning when his grandfather, Bhag Singh, called up. On Thursday, all villagers visited the victim’s house.

“This was a very unfortunate incident. A few days back, we were so excited that we will see our son after three years. But destiny had planned something else,” said Jagdeep.
He said that the postmortem would be done on Thursday evening, after which the family would decide if Singh would be cremated in the US or his body brought back to India.
Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Thursday tweeted: “Shocked at the gruesome killing of Nawanshahr’s Dharampreet Singh in California. @SushmaSwaraj Ji, request to you to take up the issue at highest levels with US authorities to ensure justice for the family”, requesting the Union minister of external affairs for help.
Representative of the ministry in the US also approached the family to extend assistance.
