BARBARIC Man buried the body inside his home; he has now been arrested
AnArmyjawanallegedly drownedhisinfantdaughterina bucket of water, hours after she was born, in a village in Rajasthan’s Churu district, police said Saturday.
TheincidenttookplaceThursday. The accused, 23-year-old Ashok Jat, later buried the body insidehishouseinGhaslaAguna village, they said, adding he has been arrested.
Ashok’s wife, 22-year-old Priyanka, gavebirth to their second daughter in the wee hours of Thursday morning. Their elder daughter is 14 months old.
“Ashok’s wife informed us about the incident on Friday following which an FIR was registered. The husband was disappointed at the birth of another girl, the woman’s family told us. He snatched the baby from the woman and drowned her in a bucket of water,” Ramchandra, station houseofficer (SHO) Tara Nagar police station, said.
Ashok then buried the body inside the house, allegedly to do away with the evidence .
ThecrimecametolightFriday when Priyanka went to her parents’ house in Jaipuriya Khalsa village, some 40 kms away from her in-laws’ residence, and lodged a complaint with the police.
“The body of the girl was exhumedFridayinthepresence of sub-divisional magistrate and an autopsy was done. The autopsy’s report is awaited,” the SHO added.
Ashok, who has been booked underrelevantsectionsformurderandsubjectingwifetocruelty, was produced in a court, which sent him to three-day police remand.Fromtheinitialinterrogation, itappearsthathewasdisappointed with the birth of the seconddaughter, the police said.
The incident has once again highlighted how poorly Rajasthan fares when it comes to protecting its girl children. The desert state also fares poorly against social indicators such as child sex ratio (888) and female sex ratio (928).
